Frisco ISD will host a rezoning forum Sept. 24 to inform parents about the rezoning process.
The forum will be from 6:30-8 p.m. at the FISD Administration Building, 5515 Ohio Drive.
Though the district will not go over school zone maps for the 2016-17 school year during the forum, parents are welcome to ask questions about the rezoning process and the rezoning timeline.
FISD board of trustees will begin looking at proposed school zones in October.
FISD Superintendent Jeremy Lyon said this is the first time the district will hold such a forum. In previous years district officials would often explain the rezoning process along the way for new FISD families, he said.
“Our hope is that parents take away a deeper understanding of the forces in our community that require us to rezone so often, and the reasons why we rezone the way that we do,” Lyon said.
As one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation, FISD increases by 3,000 students each school year on average and has opened an average of three new schools each year for the last 20 years.
Because of this, FISD undergoes a regular rezoning process to accommodate the new schools and relieve existing schools.
For instance, the four new schools opening in 2016—Vaughn Elementary, Miller Elementary, Nelson Middle School and Lebanon Trail High School—will all provide relief for schools already at capacity in the district.
LTHS Principal Devin Padavil will make a presentation at the forum to discuss the vision for the new high school and answer additional questions.
LTHS is expected to be at full capacity within four years of opening, Lyon said. The high school will open next year with just the ninth grade class.
Richard Wilkinson, deputy superintendent for business services, said doing this will help prevent overcrowding at the high school early on.
“We’re trying to impact the [fewest] number of students that we can, and at least the [ninth graders] in this case haven’t already been on a high school campus,” he said.
