The PfIugerville ISD board of trustees sent a grading policy back to committee after several PfISD teachers spoke to the board Aug. 20 saying the revisions would allow broad criteria for students to retake tests and take advantage of the policy.

"Kids will play the grade game and wait until a test is given and retake the test,” said Karen Hensc, a Pflugerville High School social studies teacher. “The kids deserve a level playing field and some clarity so a valedictorian is not someone who played the policy the best."

Amber Ruff, a math teacher at Pflugerville High School, said PfISD needs to remain competitive with other districts and the proposed policy change will hurt that.

"If we inflate their grades it’s going to make it so a Pflugerville ISD 4.0 is not as impressive as other districts,” Ruff said.

PfISD board members also expressed concern with the section about the proposed changes.

"Students will game the system, and they’ll get a 95, and I don’t think we need to allow them to retake the test to get a 100,”  trustee Carol Fletcher said.

Superintendent Alex Torrez said the committee in charge of the policy changes made significant progress on the document, and the committee needed to work on the one section about test retakes.

Ruff said she is glad the board responded to the teacher’s concerns.

“I did not think this would happen in one board meeting,” she said. “I thought it was going to be a repeated attempt with more staff members every time to make our voices be heard."
