After a successful $256.75 million school bond election in May, Montgomery ISD will break ground on two new schools by early October.

The district will begin construction of a new junior high school and elementary school on Keenan Cutoff Road, north of FM 2978, early this fall.

Superintendent Beau Rees said construction is starting with those facilities to address overcrowding at Montgomery Junior High and Lone Star Elementary schools. The schools are expected to open August 2017.

“We are over capacity in both of those schools, so that was the most pressing area,” Rees said. “We moved portable buildings in to both campuses for the school year, so we will have enough room until we get the new schools built.”

The district is also designing a second high school, which is expected to break ground in March and open August 2018, Rees said. Additionally, the district will start renovation projects at existing campuses in summer 2016.

“Each facility is being touched in this bond,” Rees said. “A majority of those renovations will start the summer of 2016.”
