Waxing Poetic is a popular line of jewelry available at Magpie’s Gifts.[/caption]More than 30 years ago, two of Chrissy Hignett’s aunts opened the first Magpie’s location in the Montrose area, originally selling arts and crafts supplies. Today, Hignett and her family own stores in Bellaire, Sugar Land and Cypress, selling a variety of retail, home decor and seasonal items.
Hignett owns the Cypress location off Barker Cypress Road and Hwy. 290 and operates the store with 12 employees, some of whom helped open the location with her in 2011.
The boutique carries earrings, necklaces and bracelets by Kendra Scott.[/caption]“When my aunt retired, they decided to combine the stores together, and that’s when I bought into the business,” Hignett said. “I worked at the Bellaire store for awhile and then we decided to open the location in Cypress.”
Some of the well-known brands available at Magpie’s include jewelry by Kendra Scott and Waxing Poetic, Columbia Sportswear shirts and Yeti coolers and tumblers, which can be personally monogrammed at the store.
Customers can have other items monogrammed at Magpie’s, including T-shirts, cups, backpacks and other personal items.
Magpie’s carries a variety of jewelry, including items from two Houston-based jewelry designers.
“Patty Clarke is a local artist who lives in Houston, and we’ve been selling her product at the Bellaire store for 25 years now,” Hignett said. “She’s a special person to us, and we’re proud to sell her line of jewelry.”
Yeti tumblers are a customer favorite and can be monogrammed in the store.[/caption]Magpie’s also sells a variety of decor items for the home, ranging from personalized cutting boards to candles to holiday items.
“Here at the Cypress store we sell a lot of home decor,” Hignett said. “Between all three stores we do the most home decor here.”
Hignett and her staff attend markets across the country each year to determine which vendors, products and styles to carry at Magpie’s each season.
Although the store specializes in home decor, some clothing is available.[/caption]“We go to Atlanta market, Dallas market and Las Vegas market,” she said. “We look for special, beautiful things.”
Hignett said she is thankful for the employees she has at the Cypress store.
“These women are the heart and soul of the store,” she said. “They have made it what it is today. They’re awesome ladies. I’m so grateful to be out here in Cypress.”
