The city of Shenandoah is considering building an events center that would accommodate sporting events and host conventions and graduations.
Although the idea is in its preliminary stages, Shenandoah is examining what type of facility would best serve the city’s long-term goals, City Administrator Greg Smith said.
“There have been facilities discussed [such as] a baseball stadium and special events center,” he said. “So there’s been a lot of different ideas thrown around, and we are just evaluating those different ideas.”
The facility’s location could be north of the Conroe ISD natatorium, at 19133 David Memorial Drive, Smith said.
Shenandoah’s role as host of events, such as the NCAA Division III Swim and Dive championships and high school football games at Woodforest Stadium has been the impetus for discussion on the possibility of building a new events center, he said.
“Obviously the city has had a strong focus on sports in the past,” Smith said. “Bidding on NCAA championships and receiving two NCAA championships in [2013 and 2015] and having another one scheduled in ’17, the focus has been primarily on enhancing the facilities for sporting events.”
Smith offered no timeline on the development of the facility, but said the city will know more over the next few months.
