After several months of searching, the city of McKinney has officially announced a new public library director. Spencer Smith will begin Aug. 10.

Smith formerly served as the library director for the city of Little Elm, where city officials said his leadership led to the tripling of library material circulation and an increase in hours of operation that included a seven-day, sixty-hour-per-week operation.

Smith also led the renovation and expansion of the municipal library, which nearly doubled the square footage and integrated technology components. This experience could come in handy in McKinney, as the city has a potential library expansion in November's proposed bond election, according to city officials.

Smith has 10 years of municipal experience and worked for the cities of Fort Worth and Haltom City prior to his tenure in Little Elm.
