A yearly educational event in Round Rock is flexing a new muscle. Round Rock ISD will hold its annual Celebration of Families event April 18 from 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Round Rock High School, 201 Deep Wood Drive. For the past 10 years, Celebration of Families has focused primarily on offering workshops, led by professionals, on parenting, education and wellness. This year, RRISD has expanded the event to include fitness activities, such as a 5K, an obstacle course, Zumba, a rock wall and an X-Box fitness demonstration. Corey Ryan, Round Rock ISD associate director of communications, is a co-organizer of this year's Celebration. "There's a lot of value in the event overall," Ryan said. One of the main new activities this year is the Celebration of Families 5K. Bill Schroeder, parent of a student at Cedar Ridge High School, hosts the yearly Outlaw Raider 5K to raise funds for Project Graduation, an all-night drug- and alcohol-free graduation party. That race will be part of Celebration, and registration funds will help pay for Project Graduation events throughout the district. "It made sense to leverage two events," Ryan said, adding each high school usually would raise its own funds for Project Graduation. "It's unique to have one event that's for all five." The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and feature awards for different age group and sponsor booths. The cost to participate for RRISD employees and students is $20; other attendees can register for $25. Proceeds from the race will be split among Cedar Ridge, McNeil, Round Rock, Stony Point and Westwood high schools. Another new competition this year will result in wellness-related grants for four RRISD schools in the district. Each Celebration attendee will receive a passport and pick a middle or elementary school to represent. For every workshop or wellness event he or she attends, the participant will receive a sticker for the passport. Schools with the highest rate of attendance, participation and school spirit showcased at Celebration will be declared the winners. The first-place middle and elementary schools will each be awarded $1,000 to spend on school wellness, such as healthy snacks or exercise equipment. The runner-up middle and elementary schools will each receive a $500 wellness grant. Celebration workshops will include an ACT/SAT Challenge Workshop for high school students from 9—11 a.m. Parents can attend workshops to learn how to help their child with elementary math, plan for college, navigate graduation requirements or explore the topic of teens and technology. Premier Martial Arts will hold its own workshop on self-protection and self-awareness. All workshops are free to attend. Aa Wellness Fair will feature community health resources, including local health insurance providers, affordable housing developers and additional education options for students. Seton Northwest Hospital will offer free bike helmet fittings and new helmets, and the Round Rock Express will give free baseball game tickets to registered conference attendants. Conference registration begins April 18 at 7:30 a.m. Parents may register for free childcare provided by YMCA at www.roundrockisd.org/celebration2015.
