Nearly a year after passing a $59 million bond package, Hays CISD is getting the bond's most expensive project off the ground.
A $28.97 million guaranteed maximum price is being recommended to the Hays CISD Board of Trustees for its sixth middle school, which was proposed due to overcrowding. The board meetsMarch 30 to decide whether to approve that figure.
The guaranteed maximum price limits the amount that a contractor can charge for construction.
The district budgeted $35 million in the bond issue for the middle school, which will be located on Dacy Lanesouth of FM 133, in an unincorporated area between Kyle and Buda.
Deputy Superintendent Carter Scherff said March 23 at the board's workshop meeting that Hays CISD was soliciting bids for the project as of March 12. Construction of the school is slated for completion ahead of the 2016-17 school year.
"The growing district is already looking ahead to its next bond, which would likely call for a new high school," Hays CISD spokesman Tim Savoy said.
Trustees could select a committee March 30 to identify the location of the district's third high school. Savoy said high schools take longer to build, hence the reason behind starting the process earlier.
