Camacho Elementary School Principal Terri Breaux said she has a vision to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, in her classrooms when the campus opens in Leander ISD in fall 2015, she said at a March 5 board meeting.
Breaux’s idea is to emphasize creativity and innovation inside and outside of the classroom, she said, by teaching students to solve problems and providing them with hands-on learning opportunities. Breaux said the educational model would be built on collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity. For example, students could work together on building models for wind energy.
Classes would bridge science with subjects such as art and literature, she said.
Because of future employment needs, she said, it is important to teach students STEM at a young age. By 2018 there will be an estimated 8.6 million STEM jobs in the U.S, she said, citing U.S Department of Labor Statistics.
