District to rezone for new campusAt its regularly scheduled Feb. 17 meeting, the Georgetown ISD board of trustees approved new attendance zone boundaries and a name for Elementary School No. 11. After considering input from the community and discussion, board members approved the proposed boundary changes. "I fall into just about all of these question marks for the boundaries," board member Melanie Dunham said. "My kids are the ones who are being split from their friends. What I can tell you asa parent and a school board member is that the things that were doing here are good for future growth, and good for all of our students. None of it was taken lightly." Boundary zones for Carver, Pickett, Mitchell and Cooper elementary schools were altered. In addition to accommodating for growth, the new zones will help shift from the split campus model at Carver and Pickett elementary schools, which had pre-K through second grade at one campus and third through fifth grade students at the other. Superintendent Fred Brent said that this shift was a priority in planning for the new school. "I think its important that the community understands that the board began the pursuit of a pre-k through five model for teaching and learning across the district when the bond was passed to build this new elementary school," Brent said. "It allows us better instruction [opportunities]." Beginning in fall 2015, Pickett Elementary School will be a pre-K through fifth grade campus, similar to the new elementary school. The current Carver Elementary School building will be repurposed for other academic uses which have yet to be determined, and the schools name will be used atthe Elementary School No. 11 campus. "We feel like that was the most efficient and effective use of the Carver name because it will be on a building where [teachers are] teaching and [students are] learning while we consider the future for the Carver site," Brent said. The new elementary school is located at 4901 Scenic Lake Drive in the Teravista neighborhood and will be openfor the 201516 school year.
