MedEquities Realty Trust Inc., a Nashville-based company that invests in a variety of health care property and health care related real estate, purchased the outstanding mortgage loan for the Lakeway Regional Medical Center in early January, according to a news release.
By purchasing the loan, which was in default, MedEquities was able to acquire the title for LRMC in early February, transitioning from creditor to landlord, the release said. The two entities entered into a 25-year lease and are working together, along with other hospital representatives, on a long-term strategic plan they say is designed to ensure viability and provide high-quality health care services.
LRMC, a 106-bed acute-care hospital, has had several CEOs since opening in 2012, but Frank Sossi, LRMCs interim acting chairman of the board, said MedEquities priorities are closely aligned with the hospitals.
"MedEquities has been highly communicative and collaborative with us from the day it acquired our debt and is aligned with our mission, vision and values for meeting the needs of patients," he said in the news release. "We look forward to working with MedEquities to restructure our current operations and explore alternatives for growing our business and maintaining our vital role in the Lakeway community."
MedEquities Chairman and CEO John McRoberts said he is excited to work with LRMC.
"Sourcing this unique investment opportunity took a coordinated and highly collaborative effort by our team and the LRMC operating group," he said in the news release. "We have a strategic vision to grow LRMC through new service lines, attracting additional specialty physician users and improving the experience and outcomes of LRMCs patients as a result. This is a great first step in solidifying the hospitals position in the Greater Austin market, and we look forward to sharing more details on the strategic plan at a later date as the specifics become better defined."
