Students from 33 local schools, including Austin and Bowie high schools, unloaded thousands of pounds of food and clothing Nov. 25 as part of A Legacy of Giving's annual Day of Service drive.
Legacy Executive Director Linda Brucker said the annual event benefited the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas and Junior League of Austin's Coats for Kids.
"We collected over 50,000 pounds of food—the most we've ever had," she said.
Teachers and students collected food and coats in PODS portable storage units, and participants unloaded the donations at the food bank during the event, said Hank Perret, president and CEO of the food bank.
"The kids are learning about philanthropy and learning about giving back. It's something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and hopefully they will instill that in their children," he said, adding the food collected this year will supply about 42,000 meals to Central Texans in need.
