Oak Hill's local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4443 plans to host its 2014 Independence Day celebration for residents July 4 at the 7614 Thomas Springs Road building.
Veteran Gary Adam, commander of VFW Post 4443, said local veterans will lead a parade at 11 a.m. as part of the annual event, and a complimentary picnic lunch with hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
"We're going to be commemorating the birth of our country," he said. "The sacrifices that the veterans have made to keep our country free are important to our way of life. There's a lot of people that have sacrificed so that we can have that. I just think that it's a good thing for the young folks to see that."
A lifetime VFW membership will be raffled off at the event, according to the VFW. To participate in the parade, attendees can bring Fourth of July decorations and decorated vehicles such as bikes, wagons and wheelchairs, and the organization will award prizes for the best decorations and most original decorations.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Adam said the event is free, though the nonprofit organization is always open to donations to help support veterans and their families. More information is available at www.vfw4443.org.
