After being closed for nearly three years, the Springwoods Pool in the Forest North neighborhood of far Northwest Austin is reopening for the Memorial Day weekend.

The pool opens May 24, and hours of operation will be Sat.–Mon. from 2–8 p.m. The pool will be open full time for summer hours beginning June 9.

Admission will be free the first two weekends, said Christina Barkley, administrative director at SafeGuard Aquatics, which was hired to operate the pool. Admission fees will be posted later on the company's website. The pool is located at 13320 Lyndhurst St., near RM 620 and Lake Creek Parkway.

Barkley said that the pool closed after the Springwoods Municipal Utility District was annexed into the city of Austin on Dec. 31, 2010. The community's recreation association had owned the pool for more than 30 years since it first opened.

The two entities disputed ownership of the pool, and the city closed it in September 2011 because of lack of funds to operate it. On May 2, it signed a contract with Austin-based SafeGuard Aquatics to operate the pool. The city also paid to replace equipment in the pump room and the heater so that the pool may be open year round, Barkley said.

Springwoods pool includes a deep end with a slide, six lap lanes and a children's entrance with mushroom-shaped water structure. Barkley said people will be able to use the pool all year for lessons, triathlon training and master swim classes. The community's swim team, the Stingrays, will now be able to use the pool for home meets.

"The Stingrays are extremely excited to get back into their facility," Barkley said. They're really interested in this facility and want this facility."

The pool will be open to city of Austin residents and nonresidents.
