Esther Coronado, owner of Super Slick's, is hoping her newest venture will fill a niche in Buda.

While Super Slick's, which opened in November, is branded as a Tex-Mex restaurant—its menu and sign each claim the Tex-Mex classification—Coronado said the restaurant provides her and the team of chefs in the kitchen an opportunity to play with recipes.

"A cook follows the recipe," Coronado said. "'Three cups of this, two cups of that,' but a chef decides maybe it's best if we add something a little different. They have more of a love for the food."

The restaurant's menu includes Tex-Mex staples such as enchiladas and tacos, but guests can also dine on shrimp scampi, Venezuelan ceviche, white chocolate crme brulee and other creations courtesy of chef Hector Martos.

The full bar includes classics such as margaritas and Mexican martinis. Martos, however, is quick to point out that some of the restaurant's most popular cocktails are his own spins on classics. The restaurant's Jokadrink is one of Martos' creations and mixes muddled cucumbers and tequila. His sangria, which is made from brandy, merlot, triple sec and fresh fruit juice, is also a brunch favorite, he said.

"I've been in the food business since I was 11," Coronado said. "Back in the day there wasn't an age requirement to work in the restaurant. Everybody worked."

Coronado's career has included stints running restaurants that dealt in Mexican, Italian, American and other foods.

In January 2013, her previous restaurant venture in Austin closed, and she took time away from the kitchen to care for her sick father. He died in April 2013, and Coronado found herself without a restaurant to run.

Then she received a call from Daniel Estrada, the former owner of the property, asking if she would be interested in starting a restaurant in Buda.

"I thought it was more or less an omen," Coronado said.

Her prayers answered, Coronado is hoping to expand on the restaurant's growing business. Coronado and Martos said Super Slick's patio and drink selection make it great for summer happy hours. The duo is also planning to add street tacos to the menu as well.

"Everything we do here is with passion, and we want what's best for the customer," Martos said. "It wasn't easy for us at the beginning, but we're still trying to do the best job."
