On April 28, Austin ISD's former Chief of Schools Officer Paul Cruz presided over his first board meeting after being named interim superintendent April 14, and the district's board of trustees discussed their ongoing search for a permanent superintendent.

"I'm just so honored to serve as interim superintendent," Cruz said. "I will do my best every single day to make sure we are supporting our students and our families in everything that we do to make sure that all of our students in the end graduate from high school and go on to their successful college, career and life."

Former Superintendent Meria Carstarphen resigned effective April 23 and is moving to Atlanta to head up Atlanta Public Schools.

At the April 28 meeting, trustee Gina Hinojosa gave attendees an update on the district's ongoing search for a permanent superintendent. AISD issued a request for proposals from potential firms that can help with the superintendent search and will accept proposals until May 7.

"We plan to select a superintendent search firm by the end of May and begin the actual search process in June," Hinojosa said.

In the meantime, community members are encouraged to submit comments on what the district should consider while it is deciding on a firm to hire, she said.
