The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Learn to Fish event from 8 a.m.–noon April 26 at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander.
Organizers welcome parents, grandparents and children of all ages to learn tackle techniques, water safety, conservation ethics and more. Children can also try to catch a fish, said Randy Bell, Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department director.
"Hopefully the weather's going to be good for it," Bell said. "We had fish delivered [Thursday], so they're getting acclimated. We're hoping they're extremely hungry come Saturday morning."
The free event is sponsored by 12 local businesses and corporations, Bell said.
Bell said he recommends attendees spend at least an hour at the park to get the full experience. Hats or visors, loose clothing and comfortable shoes are also recommended. Guests can practice casting from boats provided by volunteers, and organizers will have a fishing tank for small children without reels, Bell said.
"If you have any fishing tackle, just leave it at home. We provide it for you," Bell said. "Learn how to fish, how to catch, and be safe with it."
