After Round Rock Police Chief Tim Ryle announced his intention to retire in February, city officials promised a nationwide search to find a replacement. On Jan. 29, the city made good on its pledge by announcing the hiring of Allen Banks, interim police chief for the Albuquerque, N.M., Police Department.

Banks is expected to take over the Round Rock Police Department in early March.

"I'm really excited for Allen to join our team," Round Rock City Manager Steve Norwood said. "His experience, attitude and values are a great fit for the department and the city."

Banks comes to Round Rock with 21 years of law enforcement experience—all with the Albuquerque department. During his career, Banks has led the department's field services, support services and internal affairs divisions. In 2009 he was promoted to deputy chief and was named interim chief in August following the retirement of the former Albuquerque police chief.

Banks holds a bachelor's degree from Wayland Baptist University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is married and has three children.

"I would like to thank the city of Round Rock for the opportunity to be its next chief," Banks said. "I'm looking forward to moving my family to the community and being an active part of the community. I'm excited about the future of the Round Rock Police Department and working with the men and women there."
