Both Celia Israel, the Democrat who won the House District 50 seat in the Jan. 28 special runoff election, and Republican Mike VanDeWalle have filed to run again in the November general election.

VanDeWalle said that because he does not have an opponent in the March 4 primary, he and his staff plan to regroup before heading back out on the campaign trail.

"My campaign manager and I discussed [it], and we looked at this as spring training," he said of the special election.

Polls will now be open until 8 p.m. Jan. 28 for the Texas House District 50 runoff election.

Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir said the extension of voting hours is because of the inclement weather, hazardous driving conditions and school closures, which caused the closing of eight polling locations at Austin, Elgin and Manor ISD campuses.

"Due to the weather, some citizens may not have had a chance to vote this morning," she said in a news release. "Extending voting for an hour will also give voters who arrive at a closed polling location ... close to 7 p.m. the opportunity to travel to an another location."

Because the runoff election is using vote centers, voters may cast their ballot at any polling location and not just in their registered precinct. In the Nov. 5 general election, no candidate garnered the required 50 percent of the vote to win the seat, and a runoff election was scheduled. VanDeWalle, a Jollyville-area chiropractor, earned the most votes with 39 percent of the votes. Israel, a Realtor who lives in North Austin, earned 32 percent of the votes.

In February 2013, Strama resigned from his seat to head Google Fiber in Austin. His term ends at the end of 2014.
