Enrollment reaches a high note at Cedar Park school
Starting in mid-2014, Amy and Michael Boyd will get some help operating Sense and Color School of Music, which has been operating in Cedar Park since 2008.
The school offers lessons in guitar, bass guitar, vocal, drums, ukulele, mandolin, piano, violin and viola. Teacher Randal Robledo will take on a managerial role starting in mid-summer.
The guitar and mandolin instructor has played music since he was a child and started teaching about 15 years ago. He said he hopes to continue to build on the school's offerings including quarterly recitals and showcases featuring student ensembles.
"I've really liked what they have done with involving the community and the parents," Robledo said. "I'm going with the same vibe, making sure all the teachers and students are happy and creative and busy. We want to diversify what we teach and keep up with current songs and the classics."
Sense and Color experienced significant growth in 2013, Amy said. Between June and December, the school gained 52 students and needed to book a larger venue for the Christmas recital in December.
"That was our biggest recital yet," she said. "It was over twice as big as our last biggest one. We've pretty much outgrown every venue we've been in."
In addition to their growing business, the Boyd family welcomed a new baby in November. Amy said even with busy schedules and new management, the school will remain a locally operated, family-oriented business.
"I've always stressed that we are local here," she said. "We are pretty attached to the school and what we have built here. Not only has it been great for us, but it has been great for a lot of kids as well."
