On Saturday evening, Westlake High School history will be made as two of its former quarterbacks take the field for the NFC playoffs in Philadelphia.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is scheduled to go head-to-head with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, both leaders of the Chaparrals a decade apart—Brees graduated in Westlake's class of 1997, and Foles graduated in 2007.
Both players wore No. 9 on their football jerseys, said Derek Long, former Westlake High School football head coach. Long was the team's defensive coordinator from 1992–2002, during Brees' tenure at quarterback, and then promoted to head coach in 2003, in time for Foles' run with the squad.
He said both Brees and Foles were team players who never sought the limelight.
"They had a true love for their team and their teammates," Long said. "Even in high school, they might have had a great game, but they would talk about someone else or some other aspect of the game."
Although Long said he will be watching the game from home, he can't choose just one team to root for.
"I'll probably be wearing No. 9," he joked. "The perfect scenario is for Drew and Nick to each throw seven touchdowns. I just want both of them to play well.
"You couldn't have two better young men to represent the Westlake community. [Brees and Foles] are two role models that are perfect—respectful, have morals and treat other people right."
Watch party planned for The Domain's Blackfinn Ameripub
Not many of Foles' fans can say they've seen each one of his high school plays. However, Joe Taylor, a broadcaster for Westlake Chaparral football, said he has called every snap of Foles' high school career.
Taylor heads up Number 9 Productions and organized a watch party for Saturday night's game at Blackfinn Ameripub, 11410 Century Oaks Terrace, in Austin.
"In [Foles'] senior year, he quietly broke [Brees'] records for passing yards in a career," Taylor said. "He's got an even keel about him, a level head."
The family-friendly party begins between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. with a special "Chap Appetizer" gameday menu, and participants are encouraged to wear red to honor the West Austin school, he said. Reservations are being accepted at [email protected], and the event is not affiliated with Westlake High School, he said.
"What's unique about this type of event is that no matter who scores, the Westlake Nation will be cheering," Taylor said.
