With all votes counted, Ron Abruzzese defeated Jerry Perez in the Leander City Council Place 4 runoff election Dec. 17.
With a total of 265 votes cast, Abruzzese received 187 votes, or 70.57 percent, and Perez received 78 votes, or 29.43 percent.
Voting for both Williamson and Travis County was held at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 N. Brushy St., Leander. Early voting was held Dec. 2–Dec. 13.
All totals are unofficial until canvassed.
Abruzzese and Perez are two of five candidates who ran for the place 4 seat, which opened after current Place 4 councilwoman Michell Cantwell announced her intention to run for Williamson County Treasurer.
Randy Caldwell, Bob Hanson and Dan Michie also ran for the Place 4 seat in Nov. 5. However since none of the candidates received 50 percent of the vote, the two with the most votes—Abruzzese and Perez—advanced to the runoff.
In November, Abruzzese received a total of 342 votes and Perez garnered a total of 213 votes.
Abruzzese received 27.10 percent of the votes in Williamson County and 39 percent of the votes in Travis County. Perez garnered 18.25 percent of the votes in Williamson County and 9 percent of the votes in Travis County. Abruzzese has served on the Leander Planning and Zoning Commission for three years, most recently as the board chairman. He also has experience in updating Leander's comprehensive plan.
Perez serves on the Leander Ethics Commission. He previously ran for Leander City Council in May 2012 against Cantwell for Place 4 and in May against Simon Garcia for Place 3.
Leander council members are elected at-large.
