Grapevine to add Microland

A new amusement park expected to open in Grapevine by 2015 will have miniature trains that visitors can operate themselves, a tiny faux Mt. Rushmore and bonsai gardens.

Microland America is billing itself as the "world's first all-natural miniature themed entertainment attraction," according to a presentation to the City Council in October.

The park will have a 12,675-square-foot building and a 1-acre botanical garden on 4 acres at 2451 W. Grapevine Mills Circle.

The features planned include a "museum quality" natural exhibit with miniature railroads, miniature botanicals and bonsai; a retail gift shop; event and community rooms for birthday parties and corporate events; and an entertainment area with interactive activities for children, according to a letter to the city from Betts Hoover, president of Microland America.

The trains will be several sizes, including HO and G gauges.

Admission will be $12.50 for adults and $7.50 for children.

The council unanimously approved a conditional use permit to allow a setback deviation needed to start the project.

"This is an exciting project, it's nice to see something like this come along once in awhile," council member Sharron Spencer said.

A few residents came to the meeting with concerns about light and noise.

The council approved the permit unanimously, with the stipulation that its hours be 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon–9 p.m. Sunday.

Grant Harrell, a representative of Microland, said the park is expected to be completed by 2015.
