More than 700 guests attended local nonprofit Reach Unlimited's annual fundraising luncheon Oct. 3. Guests had the opportunity to hear stories about the organization's clients through a video and hear from families who have members involved with Reach.
Reach Unlimited serves 300 people with intellectual or development disabilities in the Cy-Fair, Tomball and Spring Branch areas. The organization was founded in 1983, and the first group home for clients opened in December of that year. In the 30 years since, Reach Unlimited has opened an additional 18 group homes in its service area.
During the luncheon, executive director Kathi Schmidt discussed plans to expand Reach Unlimited's Learning Activity Center, which will include building an all-purpose room, a stage and a community kitchen. The facility originally opened in 2005 and provides a place for clients to learn about social skills, music and cooking skills and job training.
When the expansion is completed, Reach Unlimited will be able to serve about 500 or 600 individuals.
"These steps will allow more people with disabilities in our community to live, learn and thrive," Schmidt said.
