Round Rock City Council approved a new sign ordinance at its March 14 meeting that went into effect immediately.

The ordinance will only affect new sign construction, Round Rock Planning Director Brad Wiseman said.

The ordinance was designed to streamline the sign codes so that they are easier to understand for business owners and to encourage aesthetically pleasing advertising throughout the business community, Wiseman said.

"The previous sign ordinance had been in effect for several decades, so it had become very outdated and obsolete," Wiseman said. "What we needed to do was reword the ordinance."

Among the changes to the ordinance are restrictions on pole signs and the rules on sizes allowed.
