The Community Leadership Committee—an organization dedicated to gathering and sharing information concerning Cy–Fair ISD on a local, state and federal level—began hosting community informational meetings concerning the legislative session at area high schools this week.

"The ability of CFISD to continue delivering quality education is critical to the longterm success of our community," said Stacye Anderson, chairwoman with the CLC. "The success of the district impacts all taxpayers and property owners whether they have children in the district or not."

The first meeting was from 7–8 p.m. Jan. 30 at both Cy–Fair and Cypress Springs high schools. The information presented included facts regarding the state's school finance system, accountability standards and high-stakes testing and local control and flexibility of various school districts, according to the CLC.

"The laws passed by the legislature drive everything about education—funding, course requirements, accountability testing, school start date, discipline," Anderson said. "Legislators have told us that the voices of their constituents carry far more weight than those of administrators and education lobbyists, so it is critical that our community is educated on the issues and communicate their concerns to both our delegation and members of the House and Senate Education Committees."

The meetings aim to educate community members about any action taken on legislation in Austin through presentations and prepared literature. The same information will be presented at each of the next five scheduled meetings at six different area high schools.
