SquareRt Kava Bar plans to expand with a new location in 2013.

Owners Scott Pingel and Tracy Moreno opened the business March 3 at 6000 S. Congress Ave., Ste. 106.

"We're the only kava bar in the state of Texas," Pingel said, explaining the north location will likely open during the first quarter of 2013. "There's certainly more kava awareness out there because of us."

Kava is a drink originating from the South Pacific islands that has calming properties, Pingel said. It has been known to help treat anxiety, migraines and depression, but it is also used for celebration.

SquareRt sells Kava in several forms, including liquid; chewable orange-flavored kava candy; and kava growlers, large refillable bottles.
