Buda Mayor Sarah Mangham submitted her resignation to City Manager Kenneth Williams and City Secretary Danny Batts on Oct. 23, citing her personal health as the cause.

"This is based on decisions after some medical tests that I had last week," Mangham said. "This was not something that was being considered."

Mangham was elected in 2011 when she beat incumbent mayor and current council member Bobby Lane by eight votes.

"I didn't want to be an absentee mayor, and I felt that the best thing for Buda was to go ahead and resign so I can focus on my health and so that we can get a full-time mayor in that will not be pulled the way I'm going to be pulled," Mangham said.

Because of Texas election laws, the mayoral election will not make it onto the Nov. 6 ballot.

Williams said City Council will discuss the issue at its meeting Oct. 30, and a special election will most likely be held in December or January. In the meantime, Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Sandra Tenorio will act as mayor until her term expires Nov. 6. Tenorio is not seeking re-election, so the council will have to appoint an acting mayor.

"I would just like to commend her [Mangham] for her dedication to the city as an employee and as an elected official and the mayor," Williams said. "She did a lot of good things for the city, and I just wish her all the best for the future."

Current Place 2 Councilman Todd Ruge announced his intention to seek the mayor's seat Oct. 24. Ruge said after consulting with many of his supporters during the past couple of years, he made up his mind to run in the election that would have been held in November 2014.

"It was kind of decided earlier this summer that the next election cycle that the [mayor's seat] was open, I was going to go for it, and this just kind of speeds the process up a little bit," Ruge said.
