Leander Economic Development Director Kirk Clennan resigned from his position last week, according to city officials. He began work with the city in March 2005.

Clennan was not immediately available for comment, but he thanked Leander city staff and volunteers via social media Oct. 19. He said his years working as the economic development director afforded the city the "opportunity to lay the foundation for a beautifully sustainable community."

City Manager Kent Cagle said for now, other members of city staff will absorb economic development tasks.

"What we are going to do in the short term is spread duties out among several people and see how that goes for a while, and then determine whether we are going to fill that role or not," Cagle said.

In September, Mayor Chris Fielder initiated the reformation of a city Economic Development Committee, which includes members of City Council and the public. He said Clennan's resignation will not affect the mission of the committee.

"We will continue the same mission we've always had of spurring economic development," he said. "There has never been any discussion of this committee replacing that role, and we are moving forward with the committee and will continue to work with the economic development department."

Fielder said Assistant Economic Development Director Eric Zeno acts as a liaison to the committee, which meets monthly. The committee is still accepting applications online through the city website.
