Tomball residents who enjoyed the several new events the city put on earlier this year—including the Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival and the Honky Tonk Music Festival—will be getting a second dose of new events this fall.

Over the next few months, the City of Tomball will be introducing a new bluegrass festival and a Halloween zombie themed event called Zomball. The city will also bring back its Bugs, Brews & Barbecue event for a second year, as well as another installation of Art Walk, Tomball.

This year's Bugs, Brews and Barbecue on Sept. 29 will be similar to last year's but larger and with more area businesses involved, said Mike Baxter, Tomball's marketing director. More than 75 Volkswagen vehicles come courtesy of the North Houston Volkswagen Club and more than 30 craft brews will be available from a batch of several well-known Texas breweries, including Southern Star, St. Arnold and Shiner. The barbecue comes courtesy of Tomball restaurants The Original Rib Tickler and Dickey's Barbecue Pit, which opened in the area in July.

This year's event will be located in the Historic Tomball Depot Plaza, which will help keep activities more concentrated, Baxter said.

"By keeping it all together, it will give it the additional effect of being a bigger event with more going on," he said.

The Tomball Bluegrass Festival is one of the new events planned for Oct. 27, designed to appeal to fans of the upbeat southern music style. The line-up is headlined the Sweethearts of Bluegrass, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, who were voted the best new artist in 2011 by the International Bluegrass Association. Other bands set to play include Austin's Wood & Wire and the Tomball-based group, Tayhoss.

After the success of the Honky Tonk Music Festival, Baxter said he wanted to put together another music event geared toward a particular genre.

"We want to give people who like bluegrass an opportunity to come hear the music they like that they don't normally get to hear anywhere else unless you want to drive to Houston and pay a cover change," he said. "You can come out here—parking is free, admission is free—have a picnic out on the grass and just sit and listen to your music."

The Zomball event—a part of the Second Saturday at the Depot series—will take place Oct. 13. The celebration will feature pumpkin decorating, a haunted train ride and an outdoor screening of the movie "Monster House." The next installation of Art Walk, Tomball will be Nov. 4.

Baxter said he has received a good deal of positive feedback from local business owners about the impact the events have had on customer traffic.

"Through these events we seem to be making people more aware of Tomball's unique shopping opportunities and mom and pop restaurants," he said. "There's a lot more activity going on in Tomball today than you would've seen fourteen months ago."
