The San Marcos City Council in May unanimously approved a design by Louisiana artist Aaron Hussey for a sculpture to honor the work of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Crossroads Memorial will be built at the intersection of South LBJ and MLK drives in San Marcos.

According to the city, the intersection is the only known crossroads named for the two men who worked together on the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

Hussey's design also was the unanimous recommendation of the San Marcos Arts Commission, the Parks and Recreation board and the Crossroads Selection Committee.

Hussey said he took his inspiration from the meeting between Johnson and King in the Oval Office.

The city and the committee have raised $107,000 for the project. Hays County donated 248 square feet at the southeast corner of LBJ and MLK for the memorial.

Construction is expected to begin later this year after the city completes improvements at the site. Hussey will create the sculpture and have it moved to the location.
