The park that has long stood next to Janet Bartles' home was renamed in her honor April 12 by the Cedar Park City Council.

Creekside Park, 1100 Buttercup Creek Blvd., will be renamed after the longtime city servant, who died in March after a long fight against cancer. Her husband, Gillis Bartles, and their son, Gannon, were on hand during Thursday's City Council meeting.

"I cannot imagine a more deserving person," he said. "She was a public servant, and I'm very proud for her this evening."

Bartles served on the Cedar Park City Council from 1995 to 2002 and continued to contribute to the city as a member of the Parks Board from 2006 to 2012. The 8.5-acre park named after Bartles features open space, a gazebo, new playground equipment and sand volleyball, basketball and tennis courts.

Cedar Park Mayor Bob Lemon said he has known Bartles since her work with the Buttercup Creek neighborhood association, on which he served as president.

"Janet is a great person. She was dedicated to the city and before that, to Buttercup," Lemon said. "This is a very appropriate place to honor her."

Councilman Mitch Fuller agreed, calling Bartles an "extraordinary lady" worthy of the tribute.

The measure passed unanimously. A monument bearing Bartles' name and a description of her service to Cedar Park will be placed in the park.
