A new Miss Cy-Fair Houston will be crowned this Saturday at the third annual pageant.
The high school girls, aged 15 to 19, will compete for a $1,000 scholarship.
"The contest helps build their self-esteem and gives them an opportunity to talk about their beliefs and how they want to help the community in the future," said Leslie Martone, president of the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce, the organization that hosts the event.
Miss Cy-Fair Houston will be held at the Berry Center, 9191 Barker Cypress Road, Cypress, from 6-9 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for kids.
The pageant introduced the Little Misses category for the first time last year. The competition has been divided into even more age categories this year, including the various Cy-Fair Houston Princess categories in ages 4-5; 6-9; 10-12; and the new 13-14 Teen Princess.
Winners in all categories receive a crown, sash, trophy and gifts from locally owned businesses. There will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd runners up, Most Photogenic and Miss Congeniality. All 75-plus contestants receive a bag full of goodies from local businesses.
"The people that are entering the contest learn more about the chamber by taking pictures here and the older girls get sponsors," Martone said. "This allows local companies to get involved in the future of these girls' lives."
The new Miss Cy-Fair Houston is expected to take part in chamber and community events as her school schedule permits. Every year, she hands over her crown while all of the other winners get a chance to come back and compete.
"Each year, the attendance and participation seems to grow," Martone said. "Last year, some of the sponsors and relatives attended. But I think as our marketing efforts grow we will get more participation in the event."
