Work is still progressing on Cy-Fair's first senior center—the Vaughn Gage Senior Activity Center— and plans are in the works for a grand opening celebration in early June.

Asheva Phillips, president of the Senior Citizens Bureau—the nonprofit organization developing the center—is focusing on several community outreach events before she begins accepting new clients and members for the center at the end of May.

When complete, the facility will offer services such as counseling, a prayer room, library, computer room, bedroom and shower. An activity director will plan activities each week, and rehabilitative services will be available for seniors transitioning from the hospital. In addition, two meals and a snack will be served each day.

Every person who visits the center will go through a series of questions, so employees will know what services they need, according to Phillips.

"Everyone gets [his or her] own file, so we will get a holistic look at everyone," she said.

Phillips plans to host a Caregiver's Lounge event at the center every other Wednesday, to offer caregivers a place to talk and provide support for one another. She is also accepting stories from caregivers to add to an ongoing series in the center's e-newsletter, which will focus on the ups and downs of care giving.

"They can be stories of moments when they had issues where they felt alone and didn't know where to turn," Phillips said.

On April 27, the Senior Citizens Bureau will host a Cy-Fair Movie Night at Willowbrook 24, featuring Disney's "Chimpanzee." The deadline to register is March 30, and the cost is $5.

Additionally, Phillips is seeking corporate and individual donations for the center.

"We're going to have a 10-foot donor tree, so they'll get their own dove on the tree," she said.
