The second wave of red-light cameras in Round Rock is scheduled to go live April 2 at five different approaches to some of Round Rock's most dangerous intersections.

Five cameras situated at three different intersections—most intersections have four approaches, one from each direction—are being installed this month and will begin issuing violations April 2.

The cameras will be located at:

Southbound approach to Mays Street/Hwy. 79

Westbound approach to Mays Street/Hwy. 79

Southbound approach to Hwy. 79/Sunrise Road

Eastbound approach to Hwy. 79/A.W. Grimes Boulevard

Westbound approach to Hwy. 79/A.W. Grimes Boulevard

The first camera in the city was installed Dec. 14 at the southbound approach to Red Bud Lane and Forest Creek Drive. In January there were 117 violations issued at that intersection.

Fines are $75 per violation, and video tapes of violations can be reviewed at www.photonotice.com. Fines can also be paid at that website.

David Bartels, Round Rock planning and programs administrator, said there would be one more batch of four cameras installed to bring the total number of cameras in the city to 10.

Bartels also said the city would likely not have a clear idea of how the program was working until after six months or a year of looking at the effect the cameras have.

Intersections were chosen based on crash data, citation data and officer input. The cameras were approved nearly a year ago on May 26, 2011, and were one of the few controversial split votes for the Round Rock City Council. The cameras were approved 5-2, with council members Craig Morgan and Joe Clifford dissenting.
