State Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, sent letters to Governor Rick Perry and Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price on Monday calling for a partnership to save the thousands of American Airlines anticipated job losses in North Texas.
"l am committed to working with you at the state level, and here at home in Tarrant County, to do all that we can to restore hope to the thousands of American Airline employee families here in North Texas who are facing economic hardship because of American Airline's bankruptcy," Davis said in a letter to Perry.
AMR Corp., which filed for bankruptcy protection late last year, announced on Feb. 1 its plans to cut approximately 13,000 jobs and close its Fort Worth Alliance Airport maintenance base. American Airlines employees gathered at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Feb. 14 to protest their employer's plans.
Davis said the anticipated workforce reductions would be a devastating blow to the state and local economy. Davis suggests using state funds and local incentives to help save AMR jobs.
"Together we can explore economic incentives that could potentially save thousands of jobs and restore hope to thousands of families here in North Texas who face economic disaster," Davis said. "Our state and local leaders fought successfully for thousands of workers at the Arlington GM plant in the 1990s. I am hopeful that we can again work together to save jobs critical to our local and state economy."
