West Lake Hills Mayor Dave Claunch and City Administrator Robert Wood identified key decisions city leadership made in 2011 and issues to work on in 2012.

Big decisions made in 2011

  • Participating in the Central Texas Utility Development Corporation — Claunch worked with several other Central Texas community leaders to form the Central Texas Utility Development Corporation after Lower Colorado River Authority announced it was looking to sell its 32 water and wastewater systems.
  • Strategy for negotiating with the LCRA regarding wastewater system — The CTUDC negotiating strategy continually evolved.
  • Responding to wildfire risk — West Lake Hills loosened some of its vegetation removal restrictions and invested funds into collecting more than 900 tons of dead brush from the city.
  • Sales tax revenue for budget — West Lake Hills increased its sales tax revenue after hiring a company to ensure all businesses in the city were reporting sales tax revenue to West Lake Hills.

Top issues for 2012

  • Ongoing negotiations with the LCRA — West Lake Hills will continue to negotiate with LCRA in hopes of eventually purchasing the water and wastewater system.
  • Consider expanding wastewater to serve new areas of city — West Lake Hills will negotiate with LCRA to expand the current water and wastewater system to cover sections of the community with separate septic systems near the end of its life.
  • Wildfire prevention — West Lake Hills is considering multiple wildfire prevention and response measures, including fire access roads, shaded fuel breaks that would take out some vegetation, and a camera surveillance system that would automatically detect wildfires.
  • Widening Bee Caves Road — A center turn lane will be added to a small section of Bee Caves Road at Red Bud Trail. The city will continue trying to get TxDOT to expand Bee Caves Road to the east of the Red Bud Trail intersection to lessen congestion.
