Q&A: Meet the candidates running for State Senator, District 8

Why are you running?

I believe in the power of community and the importance of effective representation. Our families and neighbors face pressing challenges that require dedicated leadership and actionable solutions. I am passionate about advocating for policies that promote access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunity for all.

If elected, what would be your top priorities?

My top priorities are (1) fully funding public education, (2) expanding healthcare access and affordability, and (3) common sense gun safety laws.

What will you bring to this office in terms of your qualifications or perspective?

Public education is the intersection of all public policy. We need people in Austin who can speak to the impact decisions about policy will have on our communities and on our children.

What are the biggest issues facing the district today, and how do you plan to address them if elected?

One of the most pressing challenges constituents face is pervasive corruption among government officials. This issue undermines public trust, hampers effective governance, and diverts essential resources from communities in need. Stronger ethics laws, increased oversight, and a culture of integrity within government are essential steps.

Why are you running?

I am running for re-election to continue to listen, learn and lead for Senate District 8. I bring the perspective of a professional educator and school counselor for 20+ years, in addition to being a mother and grandmother. Protecting children, promoting healthy families, and elevating personal freedom is my passion.

If elected, what would be your top priorities?

My top priority is protecting our children. This includes protecting them from dangerous criminals, drugs and human trafficking by securing our border. I am also a recognized leader in protecting children from sexually explicit materials—literally called "harmful" in the Texas penal code—both online and in schools.

What will you bring to this office in terms of your qualifications or perspective?

My life began as an unexpected pregnancy and I was adopted as a newborn. I grew up with loving parents, but realized not every child does. I was the first in my family to graduate from college. I recognize the life-changing power of a strong education and stable family.

What are the biggest issues facing the district today, and how do you plan to address them if elected?

My constituents are unique individuals with special dreams, talents and challenges. Most are focused on raising and providing for their families. I will continue to empower our parents, protect our families, and keep our community safe through strong educational opportunities, a reasonable and predictable business regulatory structure, and reliable infrastructure.
