Under the Volcano, located at 2349 Bissonnet St., Houston, will celebrate 30 years of business with a special event on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. with drink specials, special guest DJs, a photo booth, games, prizes and more.

Owner Peter Mitchell attributes the bar's longevity and success over the years to its ability to adapt to changes over the decades.

"At first we were sort of a college bar, then we decided to really take on craft cocktails and took older recipes, used fresh ingredients and were amazed at how much better the drinks were that way," Mitchell said. "We were just trying to be a little more serious about drinks that people have done in the past but still have fun with it."

The Dia De Los Muertos-themed cocktail bar opened in 1989 and bills itself as the first craft cocktail bar in Houston. It serves drinks made with hand-squeezed juices and fresh herbs, along with Latin American-inspired entrees and appetizers. 713-526-5282. www.underthevolcanohouston.com
