Lovett Commercial unveiled plans for the historic Barbara Jordan Post Office, 401 Franklin St., in Houston's Theatre District downtown after a groundbreaking ceremony June 27. A signature piece of the Post Houston redevelopment is a 210,000 square-foot rooftop garden and urban farm called Skylawn, designed by Hoerr Schaudt, the landscape architects behind the McGovern Centennial Park. Along with serving as a venue for events, dining and other uses, the rooftop farm will be able to provide ingredients to tenant restaurants. The former post office building, which closed in 2014, will also feature coworking offices, flexible retail options and other opportunities aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs and startups. Construction on the project should be complete in 2020, according to a news release. “We are thrilled that one of the city’s civic landmarks, the former Barbara Jordan Post Office, is being preserved through this adaptive reuse initiative and will be transformed into an iconic destination,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said in the release. www.posthtx.com
