The board of directors of Dick’s Classic Garage announced July 17 the museum’s operating structure will transition into a private, nonprofit grant-making foundation and close to the public Dec. 31.

The foundation’s new role will aim to honor the late Richard L. Burdick, founder of Dick’s Classic Garage, as well as his dedication to investing in tomorrow's leaders by helping promote character-based education.

“It was my husband’s most sincere wish to create and maintain a private, nonprofit foundation that would be both beneficial and impactful in our local community, across the country and around the globe,” Johnnie Burdick said. “We intend to honor his vision by using the proceeds from the sale of the museum’s assets to further the foundation’s charitable intent.”

Museum inventory, including classic cars, memorabilia and the museum building itself, located at 120 Stagecoach Trail, will be listed for sale. However, the museum will maintain its normal business hours for the duration of 2018.

Six of the most innovative automobiles from the post-war era will be featured in an exhibition at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio in spring 2019. American Dreams: Classic Cars and Postwar Paintings will open at the McNay on Feb. 14 and run through May 14.

Dick's Classic Garage is a part of the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History. Founded in 1980, the museum is dedicated to the preservation and display of the history of the automobile.
