Huston-Tillotson University, located at 900 Chicon St., Austin, celebrated its 143rd anniversary Oct. 26.

Founded in 1875 as Tillotson College, the university is Austin's oldest institute of higher learning and the city's only historically black college and university.

It merged with Samuel Huston College in 1952.
