The Frisco Shop, a North Austin restaurant that was on track to celebrate its 65th anniversary in August, announced it will close July 29, citing staffing challenges and increased competition.
Founded in 1953 by Harry Akin as part of his chain, Harry Akin's Night Hawk, the restaurant was the first in Austin to integrate following the Civil Rights Movement.
This closure is
one of many among long-standing Austin bars and restaurants—including Ruby's BBQ, El Gallo and Annies Cafe & Bar—as they deal with similar challenges stemming from the city's rapid growth.
The Frisco Shop is located at 6801 Burnet Road, Austin.
