Leander MLK event moved to activity center

Leander’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade and events have shifted to the Leander Activity Center at 11880 Hero Way West after the weather forecast for the day led to a change in venue.

The event was previously set to be held at Old Town Park, but the National Weather Service has forecast a high of 37 degrees Fahrenheit for Monday, prompting the city to move locations.

There will now be a shortened parade outside and the rest of the programming will be held indoors, Mayor Pro Tem Na’Cole Thompson said at the Jan. 16 city council meeting.

Quote of note

Thompson said students in the area had written essays on King and some would receive awards for their work at the event, noting that the city still wanted to commemorate the day in spite of the weather.

“Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King is widely regarded as America’s preeminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in the world,” she said.
