Lakeway requests feedback on 11 major park projects

The city of Lakeway presented 11 park improvement plans at the third town hall held by City Manager Julie Oakley on June 30.

These projects were pulled from the parks master plan and outline potential alterations such as expanding trails, improving parking, installing splash pads, adding playgrounds and more at several sites around the city. The plans cost from $430,880 to $7.8 million.

The projects consist of the following: Lakeway Activity Center, Lakeway Swim Center, Heritage Park, Lakeway City Park, Live Oak Tennis Court, Hurst Creek Greenbelt, North Lakeway Greenbelt, 601 Dragon Park, Serene Hills Park, Smith Greenbelt, Butler/Rough Hollow Park and the Bee Creek Sports Complex.

The city is requesting feedback from the community on these proposed changes, which can be sent to [email protected]. The full presentation from June 30 is available here.

The city will use the feedback to make alterations, determine the order of importance and eventually present the final plan to City Council. If approved, the city will then need to determine a funding source, Oakley said.

Lakeway Activity Center

Cost: $430,880

Proposed improvements: installation of nature playground, picnic areas; enhancing rock water feature; enhancing landscape areas; and adding fencing and lighting

Lakeway Swim Center

Cost: $3.6 million

Proposed improvements: installing splash pad; adding a lazy river; adding a 12-lane pool; installing a double flow rider surf simulator; replacing existing slides; installing musical play area; repurpose existing pool to obstacle course pool; adding multipurpose sports field; adding picnic tables and yard games; and completing building interior improvements

Heritage Center

Cost: $615,271

Proposed improvements: relocating memorial walls; relocating flag poles and obelisk monument; expanding parking lot and adding overflow lot; adding lighting; adding concrete benches; adding new entry sign and painting; and planting new shade trees

Lakeway City Park

Cost: $7.8 million

Proposed improvements: adding a half-mile paved boardwalk trail; aligning roads; improving trails in park and on beach; improving beach; adding kayak launch and drop-off loop; building new activity center/venue and picnic pavilion; renovating park entry and playground; adding sand volleyball courts; building new skate park; adding beginner skills bike park; building a new restroom; adding overlook platforms; and regrading certain areas to be open green space

Live Oak Tennis Court

Cost: $1.6 million

Proposed improvements: adding six new pickleball courts; resurfacing existing tennis courts; adding a sports plaza with amenities; and improving parking lot

Hurst Creek Greenbelt

Cost: $541,881

Proposed improvements: adding rest stops/overlooks and signage; improving crosswalk; building new parking lot; improving existing trails; and adding trailhead

North Lakeway Greenbelt

Cost: $2.5 million

Proposed improvements: adding boardwalk trail and overlook points; adding two trailheads; improving existing parking lot; and adding rugged and steep trails

601 Dragon

Cost: $681,089

Proposed improvements: building two nature play areas; enhancing native planting; adding fencing and barriers; adding signage; and naturalizing and enhancing creek drainage

Serene Hills Park

Cost: $2.2 million

Proposed improvements: building all-inclusive playground; adding nature play area; adding granite trails; adding pavilion; building various loops; adding signage; adding accessible picnic unit; adding wildlife overlook; constructing 10-foot concrete walk; and adding a wood deck

Smith Greenbelt

Cost: $473,827

Proposed improvements: improving trails and pedestrian bridge; adding signage; adding trailheads; improving small creek crossing; adding concrete trail; adding an open lawn

Butler/Rough Hollow Park

Cost: $2.3 million

Proposed improvements for option 1: adding a splash pad; adding a multipurpose field; adding ninja obstacle course; adding decomposed granite trails; adding half-mile loop; building parking lot; building a pavilion and a restroom; and building an amphitheater
