Rollingwood City Council, police aim to add golf cart ordinance

Alderman Amy Patillo and Police Chief Dayne Pryor have been working on a city ordinance that would allow the use of golf carts and neighborhood electric vehicles, or NEVs, throughout the city.

"Municipalities have the option of declining the use of these types of vehicles on [their] roads," Pryor said. "Right now we are working on an ordinance to reflect what the state law already says—what can and can't be used."

Pryor said a change the city hopes to make from state law is the issuance of a permit to anyone wishing to use a golf cart or NEV in the city.

"By asking that those who use [golf carts and NEVs] get a permit with the police department, we can provide them with information such as what is allowed."

Pryor said he plans to issue the permits as stickers as a visible sign people have met with the police.

"We are not regulating them [with permits], but educating them because we are going to see more and more of them [on the roads]. It is not to burden people, but to make them safer."

The city plans to hear from the public on the possible ordinance at its July 16 meeting.
