Kathy Slack says she wants to give people the same experience with horses she had growing up outside Detroit, from the fun of riding to the responsibility of caring for the animal's every need.
At the 14-acre Bee Cave Riding Center off Hamilton Pool Road, she uses her 37 years of horse-training experience and lifelong love of the sport to impart the knowledge she says is integral to the horse-riding lifestyle on more than 80 children and adults each week.
She arrived in Texas with her daughters, who traveled to the state to attend the University of North Texas. After a year working as an intensive care unit nurse at University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin and helping her daughters settle in to college, they asked her, "Why would you want to leave?"
"Austin somehow takes hold of you," she said.
