When Ali Trapp moved from New York City to Texas in 2018, she was ready to trade the mundane corporate world for racks of clothing and jewelry as a local boutique owner.
Trapp has owned Point of Origin, a women’s boutique in Lakeway, since moving in 2018.
Along with her five employees, she serves as the boutique’s accountant, purchaser, model and owner.
The background
Point of Origin has been in the Lakeway community for over 30 years. The boutique began as a card store and has evolved into a clothing and gift shop.
Before Trapp took over, the store carried a variety of “big box” brands, but Trapp wanted to further engage with small, local businesses, she said.
“It’s important for us to have small brands that you won’t find at Nordstrom,” Trapp said. “I love helping women who are just starting out with their businesses and seeing them grow.”
The details
Trapp hand selects almost all of the items in the boutique.
She travels to local markets across the state looking for pieces that fit her vision and style.
“The items have to be unique,” she said. “A lot of the items are based on my own personal style ... . I’ve tried to get around it, but it’s just not possible ... I can’t buy it if I don’t like it.”
Employee and customer recommendations also contribute to what the store offers.
Beyond clothing, top sellers are the vibrant Consuela bags and the Tyler Glam Wash, Trapp said.
“I love putting things together and styling things,” Trapp said. “The job is very creative ... it fulfills everything for me.”
The impact
Point of Origin provides the community with an opportunity to support local businesses and gives small businesses a platform to grow, Trapp said.
“When we need products for the store, I’m purposely using other small businesses in the area,” Trapp said. “I’m investing my dollars in the local community. I just love the small business aspect.”

Point of Origin will be moving to another building at the Lohman’s Crossing Shopping Center in early September.
