Nearly 10 years after opening her floral shop, Magpie Blossom Boutique, owner Nikki Mackenzie said she is still pursuing her dream of being a shopkeeper in small-town America.
“I have always dreamed of basically living in a small-town community, where you know the shopkeepers and the shopkeeper knows your family, and it’s all family-owned local businesses,” she said.
Mackenzie, who was an event planner in the corporate world before opening her boutique in 2012, said she started life wanting to be a florist. When she got the chance to start her own business, she decided to do something different.“I just looked around the Lakeway and Bee Cave area; nobody was doing what I would have wanted to do with flowers,” Mackenzie said. “You can get flowers at H-E-B and Randalls. But that wasn’t the niche part of the business I enjoy.”
The part of the business Mackenzie enjoys is getting to be creative with her flower designs and creating organic style arrangements. There are technical ways to arrange the flowers; the work is similar to an interior design or art project, she said.
