Humble ISD students outscored state averages in every subject except one in the 2026 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exams administered this spring to grades 3-8.
Some context
The Texas Education Agency released statewide and district-specific test scores for the STAAR math, reading and social studies exams June 16. Science scores will be released July 31.
Statewide trends show steady growth in reading scores, as well as gains in math and social studies.
The TEA uses a four-tiered grading system for student performance to score STAAR test performance in each subject:
- Did not meet grade level
- Approaches grade level
- Meets grade level
- Masters grade level
"Approaches grade level" is considered a passing score, with the TEA determining students with this score are likely to succeed in the next grade or course, but could need targeted academic intervention.
A closer look
In HISD, data for passing scores show students performed:
- Above state average in 12 subjects
- Below state average in one subject, seventh grade math
Forty-three percent of HISD students scored "approaches grade level" or higher on seventh grade math in 2026, up from 40% in 2025, while the state average for 2026 was 48%.
Students saw equal or improved performance year-over-year in all exams except:
- Third grade math
- Third grade reading
- Fourth grade reading
- Sixth grade reading
What they're saying
Humble ISD Superintendent Roger Brown said he was proud of the progress the district's students have made.
“The latest state assessment results demonstrate meaningful progress across Humble ISD, with district performance exceeding the Texas average on all but one of the grade 3-8 STAAR assessments,” Brown said. “We appreciate the vision and focus of our board of trustees regarding student achievement and safety. The hard work and commitment of our teachers, staff, students and families resulted in these positive outcomes.”
Still, Brown said the district will continue to push forward to achieve even better results.
"While many of our students are achieving at high levels, we remain focused on accelerating growth for all learners and ensuring every child has the support needed to succeed,” Brown said. “We will continue investing in strong instruction, targeted interventions and data-informed practices that drive student achievement. These results are encouraging and reinforce our commitment to continuous improvement on behalf of every Humble ISD student.”
Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath expressed a similar sentiment in a June 16 news release.
“The 2026 results demonstrate both the progress Texas students are making and the work that remains ahead of us," Morath said. "We are encouraged by continued gains in mathematics, especially with the growing number of students participating and succeeding in advanced mathematics courses. The gains in middle school reading are also notable, as it may be associated with the statewide ban on the use of cell phones in schools."
